Clinton, Joined by Biden, to Address Police-Involved Shootings

Hillary Clinton today will deliver remarks about the police-involved deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile while campaigning alongside Vice President Joe Biden in his hometown of Scranton, Penn., as well as during an appearance at the African-Methodist Episcopal Convention in Philadelphia, according to a campaign aide.

Although this is the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s first time campaigning with the vice president, the event will now reflect the shootings of the two black men in Louisiana and Minnesota that have resulted in protests throughout the country.

Late Thursday night, 11 police officers were shot ambush-style, including five fatally, in Dallas by at least two snipers, amid a protest against the recent deaths of Sterling and Castile, according to the Dallas Police.

During both of her campaign events today, Clinton, an aide said, will "renew her calls to ensure justice is served and will reemphasize the urgent need to reform our broken criminal justice system."

Following the killing of Sterling in Baton Rouge, La., Clinton released a statement expressing her support for a federal civil rights investigation into the incident and said, “something is profoundly wrong when so many Americans have reason to believe that our country doesn’t consider them as precious as others because of the color of their skin.”

And after the death of Castile - whose girlfriend live-streamed the incident on Facebook – Clinton tweeted that “Black Lives Matter.”

The former secretary of state has made criminal justice reform a central issue in her campaign, and she is frequently joined on the campaign trail by some of the “Mothers of the Movement” (women who have lost a child to gun violence or allegations of police brutality), including the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Sandra Bland.

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has not commented on the Sterling or Castile shootings. His campaign has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
