Former Butte Navy SEAL recounts bin Laden mission on national TV

BOZEMAN, Mont. -

Butte native and former Navy SEAL Rob O'Neill appeared in the first part of a two-part documentary Tuesday night on Fox News, to recount his story of shooting Osama bin Laden, and the SEAL Team 6 operation.

The documentary took O'Neill to his hometown of Butte, as he described growing up in the Mining City.

He said he did a lot of hunting with his dad, and first fired a gun when he was 12 or 13 years old.

During the segment, O'Neill enjoyed eating his favorite sandwich-- the Wop Chop-- at The Freeway.

He talked about his first job at the Vu Villa, and how a relationship gone sideways led him to later join the Navy.

By the time he was 21, O'Neill was deployed overseas as a Navy SEAL sniper.

He was stationed in Germany when he heard the news of 9/11.

O'Neill went on to become a member of the elite SEAL Team 6, tasked with 'hunting down insurgents.'

In the program, O'Neill gave details like how his team got ready to fly to bin Laden's compound to kill him, and their plan of attack.

O'Neill's father made an emotional appearance in the documentary, to recount the phone call he got right before O'Neill went on the mission.

In the interview, he said O'Neill didn't tell him what he was doing, but he felt it could be the end for his son.

He said he cried after O'Neill called him.

O'Neill said he felt it was the end for himself, too.

He didn't expect to come back from the mission, code-named Operation Neptune Spear, alive.

When asked what was it like to kill Osama bin Laden, O'Neill said, 'It wasn't real. It didn't sink in.'

While O'Neill said the SEAL Team 6 mission was as successful as they could have hoped, there's also a downside.

'It's something I have to live with everyday,' he said, during the interview.

There's been backlash to what O'Neill is revealing. Some say he broke a code by giving out Navy SEAL secrets, and that he's putting himself in danger.

Part two of the documentary airs Wednesday night on Fox News at 8 pm.
