Florida State reversed course late Friday, suspending quarterback Jameis Winston for the whole game, instead of the first half, against No. 22 Clemson on Saturday night.
'Based upon the results of our continuing investigation into Tuesday's incident involving Jameis Winston, we have decided to not play him for the entire game,' the interim president Garnett Stokes and Athletic Director Stan Wilcox said in a statement.
Florida State said Wednesday that Winston, last season's Heisman Trophy winner, would be suspended for the first half of the top-ranked Seminoles' game, at home, after he shouted an obscene statement in the student union.
'As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game,' Stokes and Wilcox said in a statement Wednesday.
At a news conference just after the suspension was issued, Winston said he wanted to apologize 'to the university, to my coaches and to my teammates.' He added, 'I did something, so I've got to accept my consequences.'
It is the latest episode involving Winston, who was accused in late 2012 of raping a fellow student. This month, the woman's lawyer said Florida State had begun a disciplinary inquiry into the case. In May, Winston admitted stealing $32 worth of crab legs from a supermarket.
Winston's backup Sean Maguire, who has thrown 26 passes in his college career, will start the game in his place.
