Ex-Obama Speech Writer Explains Origins of the Stump Speech

One man who knows a thing or two about stump speeches is Jon Favreau, President Obama's former speech writer.

Favreau got his start working for John Kerry's failed presidential campaign in 2004 and he met Obama during the Democratic National Convention that year. He later went on to work for Obama when he was a senator and played a pivotal role in Obama's 2008 election and the first years of his administration.

The stump speech is a campaign tool that Favreau, and every other presidential speechwriter, knows well.

"These speeches are their argument for why they should be president," he says.

Part of the beauty of a stump speech is that it "can be reused again and again, anytime, anywhere," Favreau, 35, said.
