Why Trump is Meeting With Top Republicans in DC

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump will meet with top Republican leaders in Washington, D.C., today as he tries to bridge the divide within the Republican Party after a contentious primary race.

Trump’s visit to Washington will bring him face-to-face with House Speaker Paul Ryan, the nation’s top Republican elected official who has yet to offer his support for the real estate mogul’s candidacy.

The two men have only met one other time, crossing paths backstage at a 2012 fundraising event for the presidential campaign of Mitt Romney, who is now one of the most vocal critics of Trump’s run for the White House.

Trump and Ryan also spoke on the phone briefly earlier this year about the House GOP’s election-year agenda, a conversation both men described as positive.

Trump will start his day on Capitol Hill at the headquarters of the Republican National Committee, where he will meet with Speaker Ryan and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. He will then meet with Ryan and other members of the House Republican leadership team.

Later in the morning, Trump will meet with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the GOP Senate leadership team at the National Republican Senatorial Committee offices.
