Not to be outdone by Hillary Clinton, who took the subway Thursday morning, Bernie Sanders decided to go on a stroll in Midtown Manhattan. Accompanied by a dozen Secret Service agents and a handful of staff, Sanders surprised and delighted New Yorkers as he hoofed it Thursday evening.
On his way to tape an interview, the Vermont Senator and Brooklyn native stopped for a snack at the Brooklyn Diner. He ate a bowl of chicken soup and an English muffin, while sitting at a booth near the window with his wife Jane.
After finishing, he announced to his staff and Secret Service detail that he wanted to walk. He grabbed his jacket from his motorcade and started east along 57th street.
Along the way other people ran up to the progressive super star and asked for selfies. Several told him they were "feeling the Bern" and could not believe it was really him. They shouted policy positions they agreed with. At one point a man said, “Bernie, you’re doing a hell of a job!”
Sanders waved and said “thank you” to fans who honked from their cars and shouted from across the street. Jane Sanders walked alongside her husband and introduced herself to folks too. At some moments as the crowd swelled to a near mob, but the Service agents and anxious staff kept the entourage moving. In true New York fashion, some people stayed on their phone calls and barely looked up at the scene.
In total, the Vermont-New Yorker walked two long avenue blocks and about three shorter blocks (from 57th Street and Seventh Avenue to 54th Street and Fifth Ave) before jumping back into his motorcade. Sanders is known for these impromptu strolls. He takes one in almost every city he visits.
The New York primary is now just weeks away and both Democratic presidential candidates are planning to spend a significant amount of time campaigning in the state.
