Despite Tuesday Primary Losses, Sanders Remains Upbeat

Despite his projected loss in the Maryland and Delaware Democratic primaries, Bernie Sanders on Tuesday night predicted a win in West Virginia, which holds its primary May 10, and cast himself as the best candidate to defeat GOP front-runner Donald Trump in November.

“As of today we have now won 16 primaries and caucuses all over this country,” Sanders said at a rally in Huntington, West Virginia. “And with your help we're going to win here in West Virginia.”

Maryland is one of five states voting tonight. ABC News has yet to make a projection in the Democratic primaries in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, and delegate-rich state of Pennsylvania.

These five contests are crucial for the candidates because of the tight race for delegates. Sanders is trailing behind Clinton in delegates and superdelegates, but Tuesday night Sanders urged his supporters to look beyond the delegate math.

“Almost every national poll and every state poll has us defeating Trump and that margin for us is significantly larger than Madam Secretary Clinton,” Sanders said.

“And the reason that we are doing so much better against Republican candidates is that not only are we winning the overwhelming majority of Democratic votes, but we are winning independent votes and some Republican votes as well,” Sanders said. “And that is what I hope the delegates to the Democratic convention fully understand.”
