Trump Says Women Who Get Abortions Should Be Punished If They're Banned

Donald Trump said that women who have abortions should be punished in some way if the procedures are banned, in a preview clip released by MSNBC ahead of its town hall broadcast.

The controversial statement was made during a taping of the town hall, a portion of which was shared on the cable network ahead of the full town hall, which will air tonight.

ABC News has reached out to the Trump campaign for further clarification. The campaign released the following statement from Trump: "This issue is unclear and should be put back into the states for determination. Like Ronald Reagan, I am pro- life with exceptions, which I have outlined numerous times."

In the clip of the exchange, Trump is pressed repeatedly by host Chris Matthews if he thinks there should be "some form of punishment," and Trump finally says: "For the woman?... Yeah."

He said that the punishment in question would "have to be determined."

The statement has already drawn criticism, including from the head of Planned Parenthood.

The two Democratic candidates also tweeted their feelings moments after the news broke.
