Civil Rights Leader Urges Action on Supreme Court Nominee

Civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis urged Senate Republicans Thursday to consider President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee –- highlighting the high court’s critical role in the Civil Rights movement.

During a press conference with Congressional Democrats, Lewis noted that it was the Supreme Court that ended the Montgomery bus boycott and ordered the city to integrate its bus system.

“When the decision came down, the people were stunned. One elderly woman was heard to say, God almighty has spoken from Washington today,” Lewis said.

“We must do what is right. We must act on the mandate of our Constitution,” he continued.
