Iowa State Results Election 2016

Iowa held its Democratic and Republican caucuses on Feb. 1, 2016. 52 delegates were at stake for the Democrats and 30 delegates for the Republicans.

Why The State Is Significant:

• Iowa traditionally holds the nation’s first nominating contest: the Iowa caucuses. A strong finish in the Hawkeye State can be key to propelling presidential candidates into the rest of the primary season and many contenders visit all of the state's 99 counties.

• In 2012, Iowa, which is known as a swing state, voted for Barack Obama over Mitt Romney, 51 percent to 46 percent.

Fast Facts:

• Ted Cruz won the 2016 Iowa caucuses, followed by Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Ben Carson. Hillary Clinton prevailed on the Democratic side over Bernie Sanders.

• According to entrance polls, three-quarters of both Cruz’s and Rubio’s supporters were looking mainly for electability or a candidate who shares their values; by contrast, three-quarters of Trump supporters were mainly looking for someone who can bring needed change or who tells like it is.
