Twitter Educates Ted Cruz on 'New York Values'

Twitter had a strong message for Ted Cruz last night: Don't mess with New York.

At the Republican debate in South Carolina, Cruz attacked his main rival, Donald Trump, for his "New York values."

"Everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage," Cruz said. "Not a lot of conservatives come out of Manhattan."

Trump was quick to chastise his opponent for his "very insulting statement."

Yet the biggest backlash came from Twitter. The hashtag "NewYorkValues" took the site by storm, with users aiming to show Cruz what exactly those values really are.

Some of the responses were serious, coming from top elected officials like New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who called into the local news media company NY1 to offer a personal lesson for the Texas senator.

"[New Yorkers are] not judgmental, negative and hostile the way Cruz was," he said. "I’m always open to give him an education on what New York values are all about."

Many around the country found themselves--often surprisingly--agreeing with Trump, including Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Many, like Trump, evoked the heroism and unity in the city following 9/11.

Others took a more light-hearted approach.

The hashtag New York Values has been tweeted more than 10,000 times.
