Obamas Take Part in Community Service Project for MLK Jr. Day

The Obamas commemorated Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday with a visit to a Washington, DC elementary school to participate in a community service project.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama dropped by the District’s Leckie Elementary School to plant a garden bed, plant vegetable seeds and packed a bag of books –- including Dr. Seuss’s “Oh the Things You Can Do that Are Good for You!”

They were joined on their visit -- part of the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative -- by White House mentees and AmeriCorps volunteers working at Leckie, which has a large number of students from military families.

In addition to the Obamas, cabinet secretaries and other officials participated in their own series of events to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a day of service in the Washington area and across the country.
