South Carolina senator and former presidential candidate Lindsey Graham announced this morning he is endorsing Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush.
Bush had told Fox News earlier that that he was excited about the coveted endorsement.
"Lindsey Graham is probably the most knowledgeable person on the Hill as it relates to national security, military affairs, foreign policy. And his endorsement is very meaningful. And along with it come a lot of friends and supporters of his,” Bush said.
Graham's camp said the state’s senior senator is supporting Bush because he “is prepared to be commander-in-chief on Day One,” according to The Charleston Post and Courier, which first reported the news.
“He’s steady and ready,” Graham was expected to say. “He understands the serious threats our nation faces and has a plan to keep us safe.”
Graham is backing Bush to ensure “the Republican Party picks a nominee who can win in November.”
If Bush is the nominee, “we will beat Hillary Clinton,” Graham was expected to say.
The endorsement is not wholly unexpected. Bush, in recent days, had picked up over 20 of Graham’s former backers. At the last debate in which Graham participated, he famously praised another Bush. As he discussed national security, he went on to discuss the Iraq surge.
"The surge worked! It worked! George W. Bush made mistakes, but he did adjust. I blame Obama for ISIL, not Bush,” Graham yelled. “I’m tired of beating on Bush! I miss George W. Bush! I wish he were president right now! We wouldn’t be in this mess!”
The endorsement, though perhaps not a game-changer for Bush, who has stumbled in the polls since last fall, is all a part of the campaign’s push to appeal to South Carolinians, particularly military personnel and veterans in the state.
