Four reported dead in Morgantown

West Virginia authorities are investigating shootings this morning at three locations in the Morgantown area, prompting schools to be locked down throughout Monongalia County.

Officials have not formally released information about the number of casualties, the circumstances or the connection among the victims, if any.

But MetroNews, a West Virginia media outlet, and the Associated Press both are reporting four fatalities and identified three of the victims.

The news outlets also identified the suspect as Jody Hunt, but Michael G. Wolfe, director of Monongalia County Homeland Security Emergency Management Agency, said at least some of the information appeared to have come from police radio communications; there has been no official statement from law enforcement, he added.

Mr. Wolfe confirmed that the state medical examiner's office, which is called in when there are deaths, had been notified.

The shootings occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Westover, Cheat Lake and on Chaplin Road, just outside of Morgantown's limits, near the Star City exit of I-79, Mr. Wolfe said.

Westover and Star City are just minutes away from the West Virginia University campus.

Police issued an all-points bulletin for a suspect vehicle, described as a late-model, perhaps 2011, black Ford F150 with an extended cab. It has a black Tonneau cover over the bed, a sticker in the back window and a blacked-out license plate.

People in the area should avoid approaching vehicles that look like the Ford truck, according to First Sgt. Jay Powers of the West Virginia State Police.
