Afghan supreme court chief secretariat killed, Taliban claims responsibility

KABUL, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Unknown armed men shot and killed chief secretariat of Afghan Supreme Court here in Kabul on Saturday, police said.

'Atiqullah Raufi, the chief of secretariat of supreme court, was on the way to office when unknown armed men opened fire and killed him on the spot this morning,' Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai told media here.

The attack took place at 08:30 a.m. local time in Diwan Begi area at 5th precinct, he said, adding the attackers have escaped.

Efforts are underway to identify the culprits behind the deadly attack, the spokesman added.

Meantime, Zabihullah Mujahid, who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit, in talks with media via telephone from unknown location claimed of responsibility, saying fighters loyal to the Taliban outfit had gunned down Raufi Saturday morning in Kabul city.

Taliban militants fighting the government to regain power have intensified offensives against government interests and government facilities including soft targets over the past couple of months.

On Thursday, the armed outfit organized a suicide attack among hundreds of people who were gathered at French Cultural center in Kabul to watch a theatrical performance, leaving two persons including the bomber dead and injuring 20 others, all civilians.

The militants in a similar attack on the same day also claimed seven lives including a suicide bomber and six personnel of Afghan national army.

Militancy has gotten momentum amid the withdrawal of NATO-led forces from Afghanistan as the alliance combat mission will end by Dec. 31 this year and Afghan security forces are set to take over security responsibility of their country by January 1, 2015.
