British jihadi passport bans explained

Airlines failing to check they are not taking anyone who is a 'direct threat' will be barred from landing at British airports.

How long for?

For at least 2 years. The Government wants to prevent Brits who have travelled to fight with ISIS from coming home and radicalising other young people and to prevent terror attacks on British soil from people trained in Iraq and Syria.

Will they ever be allowed to return?

Yes, with conditions. People who repeatedly try to return to Britain they will be interviewed by police. They will either face prosecution, restrictions on movements or be forced to attend a de-radicalisation programme.

Officers could travel abroad to interview suspected jihadists and determine whether they are to be banned from returning to the UK.

What happens if they come back anyway?

Those that attempt to return to Britain in secret will face a five year jail term under a new criminal offence.

When will this be introduced?

A Counter Terrorism Bill will be introduced in Parliament this month, to be fast-tracked into law by February.

How many British jihadis are in Syria and Iraq?

Estimates are around 500. However the Government have only managed to seize 24 passports which has frustrated Theresa May and David Cameron.

Have any come home?

Security services believe that around 250 British people have returned to the UK after travelling to Syria and Iraq.

How many British Jihadists have died in Iraq and Syria?

Experts say reports of deaths of British jihadists in Syria and Iraq have now reached 30.

Was there any opposition in Government to these plans?

Although Nick Clegg had initially opposed such measures, sources now say that he now supports them.

When Mr Cameron first raised the prospect of barring British jihadists from returning to the UK in August Dominic Grieve, the former Attorney General, said it was likely to be a 'non starter'.

He pointed out that withdrawing an individual's passport would effectively make them 'stateless', a breach of UN laws. The plans have been drawn up by the new Attorney General Jeremy Wright.
