TSA chief John Pistole to retire

John Pistole, administrator of the TSA, has announced he will retire from public service.

Pistole, who joined the agency in 2010, has led it for more than four years.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson praised Pistole's work to establish PreCheck, the agency's trusted traveler program, as well as his attempts to transition the agency into screening passengers more based on risk.

'Because of his efforts over the past four and a half years, our country's transportation systems are more safe and secure. I am grateful for John's contributions to DHS, TSA and our country. I congratulate John on his career as a selfless public servant and wish him and his family the very best as he leaves TSA. I also thank John for his friendship, counsel and devotion to duty,' Johnson said.

Pistole also steered the agency through several PR crises, including an enormous public outcry over 'naked' body imaging scanners that were eventually removed from service and his abortive order that would have allowed knives and other small blades back into passengers' carry-on items, as well as the way the TSA acquires and warehouses items.
