Train Collision with SUV Kills Three in Southern Illinois

Three members of an Illinois family were killed when their SUV collided with a freight train at a Vandalia crossing, about 70 miles from St. Louis, the Fayette County coroner's office reports.

Bruce Bowen, Fayette County Coroner stated on late Thursday that the three victims were an adult female and two children, a boy and a girl. Neither the names of the victims nor their ages were released until now. The van was a block away from the parade route round 6:45 PM, at the intersection of 6th and Main Street, police said, when the train hit the automobile.

Two additional people were also injured in the same accident and brought to a nearby hospital via helicopter, Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray said. Their condition is unknown to this point.

The collision took place around 7 PM, just a few moments before the the annual Halloween Parade in Vandalia was scheduled to begin, which went ahead as planned despite the accident. The van was not part of the parade.

Police Chief Ray did not release any information as to what caused the accident and noted that the bars and lights at the crossing had been functioning properly and that authorities had to investigate further.
