Political partisans still differ widely in their media consumption habits, but can no longer reside completely in an 'information silo,' according to a Pew Research Center study released Tuesday morning.
The study, 'Political Polarization & Media Habits,' found that more strong conservatives and liberals are coming into contact with conflicting world-views on a daily basis by consuming a wide variety of media content and talking politics on social media channels like Facebook.
Fox News is still the far-and-away favorite news source for 'consistent conservatives'-47 percent picked the channel as their No. 1 political news source. 'No other sources come close,' according to the report.
On the other hand, 'consistent liberals' did not register a clear favorite for news-15 percent pick CNN, followed by 13 percent for NPR and and 12 percent for MSNBC.
Overall, CNN is the most cited go-to source for government and politics news (16 percent), followed by Fox News (14 percent).
The report, which was based on an online survey conducted this spring, found that strong conservatives are much more skeptical than strong liberals about the veracity of media coverage, and expressed 'more distrust than trust' for 2/3 of the media outlets asked about.
Still, Fox News is widely trusted (88 percent) by 'consistent conservatives,' and widely distrusted by 'consistent liberals.'
'Consistent liberals' expressed the most confidence in N.P.R., PBS and the B.B.C., according to the study.
The report also found that political moderates turn first to CNN for political news and information, which is line with the network's modus operandi as a centrist alternative to Fox News and MSNBC.
Not surprisingly, moderates, compared to strong partisans, tend to encounter a more diverse slate of political opinions on social media platforms.
Legacy media outlets like NBC and ABC still trump young-but-influential outlets like POLITICO and Buzzfeed in name recognition, the study found.
'Thus, while they may elicit strong views in one direction, the share of respondents weighing in is relatively small,' the study's authors wrote.
The study also found that strong liberals are more likely than strong conservatives to end a Facebook friendship due to politics.
