KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Keene State College officials say off-campus gatherings coinciding with an annual pumpkin festival in the New Hampshire city of Keene escalated, leading to arrests and injuries.
School officials provided few specifics on Saturday's melee but said Keene State students and out-of-town visitors were involved.
Student Ellery Murray told The Boston Globe she was at a party that had drawn a huge crowd when people started throwing rocks, pumpkins, buckets and other things. She said police responded in riot gear and used tear gas to break up the crowd.
New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan said state and local safety officials worked to defuse what she called 'the situation.'
Emergency officials said hours after the commotion broke out that they were still working the scene and couldn't provide any details.
