ISIS could be in possession of a chemical weapon arsenal after it was revealed the terrorist group have control of a former chemical weapons factory.

The terrorists took control of the factory containing 2500 rusting chemical weapons near Baghdad back in June, the UK's Daily Mail reports.

Iraqi officials claim they have seen CCTV footage of the abandoned weapons site containing the lethal nerve agent Sarin being looted.

The chemical was made at the site in the 1980s and 1990s.

Iraq's UN Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim reportedly wrote to the UN saying that armed terrorists had taken the Muthanna complex back in June.

In the letter obtained by the Daily Mail, Mr Alhakim says the chemical weapons were kept in two bunkers at the complex.

'The project management spotted at dawn on Thursday, 12 June 2014, through the camera surveillance system, the looting of some of the project equipment and appliances, before the terrorists disabled the surveillance system,' Alhakim wrote.

'The Government of Iraq requests the States Members of the United Nations to understand the current inability of Iraq, owing to the deterioration of the security situation, to fulfil its obligations to destroy chemical weapons,' he said.

US Defence Department spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby says the weapons are most likely 'pretty old and not likely to be able to be accessed or used against anyone right now'.

'Frankly, it would likely be more of a threat to them than anyone else.'
