Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian national who is the first person to be diagnosed with the Ebola virus in the U.S., traveled to Dallas to marry his longtime girlfriend and the mother of his son, the pastor of the woman's church told his congregation this week.
The Rev. George Mason, senior pastor of Wilshire Baptist Church, said in an email message Thursday that the woman, who is named Louise and whose last name NBC News is not reporting, joined the church during the summer, a decision that was recorded in the church's July 6 bulletin. 'I have spoken with Louise by phone this morning and learned that Thomas Eric Duncan, who currently is hospitalized in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, came to Dallas to marry Louise and start a new life in America,' Mason wrote in the email, which was obtained by NBC News and was confirmed Saturday by the Rev. Mark Wingfield, the church's associate pastor.
'It is important to know that we have no reason to believe there has been any exposure of the Ebola virus at Wilshire. None of the family and friends of Mr. Duncan have been present at Wilshire since his arrival in the United States Sept. 20,' Mason wrote. The woman and three children who came into contact with Duncan are in seclusion, and 'you can imagine how frightening this must be for all of them, mixed with the sadness of Mr. Duncan's diagnosis,' Mason added. 'Please join me in praying for God's mercy and peace to fall upon each of them and for God's healing.'
