The top-ranked Williams, who had not advanced past the fourth round of a Grand Slam event his year, won the U.S. Open for the third year in a row and the sixth time over all. With her 18th major championship, she tied Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on the career list.

Williams, who at 32 is the oldest woman to win this tournament in the Open era, emerged from a women's draw decimated by upsets. She was the only player among the top nine seeds to reach the quarterfinals, and Wozniacki, the 10th seed, was the highest seed Williams faced.

That hardly mattered to Williams, who had expressed relief and excitement at her success at the U.S. Open after struggling at Grand Slam events this year. She was dominant force once again in Flushing Meadows, never losing more than three games in a set before the final.
