New mortar fire from Gaza strikes Israel during ceasefire

The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was tested Tuesday by reports of new mortar fire from Gaza.

No injuries or damages were reported in the strike on southern Israel - the first act of aggression since the bloody 50-day war in the Palestinian territory ended last month.

Hamas said it had nothing to do with the mortar, which exploded in a mostly empty desert near the Gaza border, and remains committed to the truce.

The Israelis also said it would not affect the peace-making process.

The mortar attack came just hours after the Israelis and Palestinians agreed to a United Nations-brokered deal aimed at rebuilding Gaza while keeping the construction supplies out of Hamas hands.

Some 17,000 Gaza housing units were destroyed or severely damaged and about 165,000 Palestinians were left homeless in the Gaza conflict, the UN reported.

The ceasefire went into effect on Aug. 26 after fierce fighting that left 2,140 Palestinians - about a quarter of them children - dead.

The Israelis suffered 72 casualties, all but six of them soldiers.
