Champion NASCAR driver Tony Stewart was being investigated by authorities in upstate New York after he reportedly hit another driver - who was outside of his car - during a dirt-track race on Saturday night.
The other driver, Kevin Ward, had crashed his car after Stewart spun him out, according to multiple reports. Ward was out of his car when Stewart, on the ensuing pass, allegedly fish-tailed his car into him, knocking him into the air.
Ward's condition was not immediately known.
Officials at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park immediately halted the race.
'Tonight's racing events were suspended due to an accident. Please hold off on any speculation until we have further information to share,' was the statement released by the Canandaigua Motorsports Park Facebook page.

Rich Willis, a fan at the event, told SportingNews.com he couldn't see what happened but that his sister, who had a better seat, did. He said he saw Stewart and Kevin Ward get into the wreck.
'People (who could see it better) said the guy got out of his car and was gesturing angrily at Tony Stewart when Tony Stewart came by during the next lap under yellow,' Willis told the outlet.

'He approached him and evidently when he was driving by the guy standing on the track gesturing at him, he gunned his engine. What happened was the back end kicked out and clipped the guy and the guy flew across the track.'
Stewart is a three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Winner.
