The cremated remains of nine victims of the 1978 Jonestown Massacre were discovered in a former Delaware funeral home.
The state's Division of Forensic Science ordered an excavation at the old Minus Funeral Home in Dover where 38 containers of ashes were found, according to a Dover Police Department statement.
Investigators found loose dirt on the property and plan to check for more cremains that may be buried.
The discovered jars were marked and identified most of the victims including the nine victims of the mass cult suicide-murder in Jonestown, Guyana, but five containers were blank.
It's unclear why the Jonestown victims' remains were at the Dover funeral home.
More than 900 Americans died in the mass suicide ritual in the jungles of Guyana during an agricultural mission.
The Delaware forensic team collected all the found cremains and will identify the next of kin for burial arrangements.
They also found arrowheads, animal bones, oyster shells and charcoals, police said, in addition to bronze gravestones for military veterans from World War I to the Vietnam War.
