Four passengers dead after car carrying five people rolls into creek in Queens

Four people died Friday night after a car careened into a Queens creek that feeds into the East River, sources said.


Rescue divers leaped into the water off 19th Ave. near 37th St. in Astoria. at about 10:30 p.m. after the unidentified vehicle smashed through a guardrail, then through a fence, and then plummeted into a creek, officials said.


The driver, a man, managed to get out of the car, swim to shore and call 911, police sources said.


Divers pulled out two more men and two women found trapped in the submerged auto, officials said.


'They were pulling out one person at a time and rolling them down the street to an awaiting ambulance,' said one witness. 'Paramedics and firefighters were sitting on top of one of them performing CPR as they were being rolled out.'

The four were rushed to a hospital. Sources said all four died.


The cause of the crash was under investigation Friday night.
