2 more arrested in beating of driver who hit boy

DETROIT - Two additional suspects are under arrest in connection with the brutal beating of a motorist who hit a Detroit boy last week, Detroit police announced Monday. The beating has sparked outrage across the nation.

The men, ages 24 and 30, were arrested Monday. Detroit Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody said investigators are looking at all angles in the attack Wednesday on 54-year-old Steve Utash and are not ruling out the possibility of hate crime charges.

Earlier Monday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges against Bruce Edward Wimbush Jr., 17, who was arrested Saturday in connection with the attack on the Clinton Township, Mich., man.

Wimbush faces charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do great bodily harm. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

A 16-year-old also held in the case has not been charged yet and remains in Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center.

The suspects are believed to have been among a crowd that attacked Utash after his truck struck a 10-year-old boy who went into the street. When Utash got out to check on the boy, he was severely beaten by people 'with their fists and feet,' according to a news release from Worthy.

Utash remains hospitalized and has been in a coma with critical injuries the last several days.

'The facts of this case are unbelievably tragic. We have charged this defendant with a capital offense. I will not comment further because this investigation is continuing and widening,' according to the news release.

The assault with intent-to-murder charge against Wimbush is punishable by up to life in prison, and the bodily harm charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

An online fundraiser for Utash has raised more than $116,000 toward his medical expenses. Utash, a tree trimmer, does not have health insurance.
