Ukraine decides to compete in Paralympics in Sochi

Ukraine has decided against boycotting the Winter Paralympics in Sochi.

The head of Ukraine's Paralympic Committee says the country's athletes will stay and compete in Sochi despite Russia's military moves in Crimea.

The decision was announced a few hours before Friday's opening ceremony.

Russian news agency R-Sport quotes Valeriy Sushkevich, the president of Ukraine's National Paralympic Committee, as saying 'we are staying at the Paralympics.'

However, he adds 'I don't know to what extent the team can focus on the result now.'

Ukraine has decided against boycotting the Winter Paralympics in Sochi.

Two parades are scheduled this month in the Adirondacks to honor the New York region's athletes who competed at the Sochi Olympics, including medal winners Andrew Weibrecht and Erin Hamlin.

Overshadowed by the international crisis over Ukraine, Russia welcomes the sporting world back to Sochi this week for Winter Paralympics that will be snubbed by some politicians and will struggle to match the successful Winter Olympics that ended less than two weeks ago in the Black Sea resort.
