Authorities are reporting a chase that has ended in a standoff on Lake Shore Drive, involving an armed fugitive wanted for murder.
People near the scene could hear police apparently addressing an individual in a stopped vehicle by loudspeaker, telling the person to 'show me your hands' and 'put your hands up.' The man is wanted for murder out of Harvey, a police source said.
The standoff was creating a traffic nightmare on Lake Shore Drive. Police were stopping all northbound traffic on Lake Shore Drive at North Avenue and directing it off there. Joggers and cyclists were also being turned back along the path there.
A Toyota Avalon with two women and a small boy inside had been rear-ended just south of the Fullerton exit, by a car that had taken off, but it was not clear if it was related to the chase of the fugitive. The chase apparently started on the Dan Ryan Expressway and involved the Illinois State Police.
Chicago police had no immediate comment.
More details to come.
