Comedian Jimmy Kimmel may have the best selfie of 2014 so far, given that it has all three Clintons in it. The late-night host scored the picture after an interview with Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea, in a nod to Ellen DeGeneres and her star-studded selfie. The interview took place as the closing part of the Clinton Global Initiative University, an event that takes place at the Arizona State University. Kimmel joked that former president Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton had been unable to get a sitter for Chelsea, which was why they were able to attend.
Kimmel's approach in the interview has been described as playful, with a good measure of self-deprecating humor. He asked about how the Clintons had become a 'superfamily,' prompting Hillary and Bill to recount how they had met. Kimmel also asked Hillary Clinton about a particular incident when, as a young girl of 13, she had spoken out on an important political issue. Hillary had called Chicago's mayor, Richard Daley, to report irregularities experienced by voters during the Kennedy campaign. Kimmel asked her why she had called, and she explained that her social studies teacher had encountered some difficulties, so she and others called the mayor of Chicago accordingly.
Of course, 2016 loomed large as a topic of conversation, with ongoing speculation about whether or not Hillary Clinton will run for president of the United States in that year. Hillary deflected the question, affirming her concerns for the direction of the United States and noting that beyond questions of who runs for office, it is vital to establish what they should do in office. A student asked Clinton a poignant question about representing women in American politics: if Hillary does not do this, the questioner asked, who will? Clinton again deflected, affirming that she is mulling the question over. However, all three Clintons were willing to give Jimmy Kimmel an outstanding selfie.
In addition to the jokes, there was some serious discussion about policy issues. Hillary talked about climate change, an issue that she believes will be the most important for young people by the time they reach her age. Bill talked about unemployment rates around the world, which have hit youth in particular very hard. For all that they discussed serious problems and challenges, both Hillary and Bill displayed optimism regarding the future. They highlighted the importance of the millennial generation, which Hillary characterized as a socially active and involved generation.
Will Jimmy Kimmel's selfie with the three Clintons top the selfie Ellen DeGeneres took with celebrities Bradley Cooper, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and Julia Roberts? That selfie was shared by DeGeneres' followers on Twitter over 3.4 million times. Still, it is hard to beat a selfie featuring the entire Clinton family. Kimmel also asked Hillary what she will do with Chelsea's former room if she does run and is elected. Specifically, he asked if Chelsea would be given the room back, or if Hillary would convert it into a home gym. Hillary did not answer, but the question did make Bill laugh.
