Doctors say it's unlikely Dr Rick Sacra has relapsed, but are keeping him in isolation at UMass Memorial Medical Centre in Massachusetts as a precaution.
Dr Sacra caught the deadly virus while working in Liberia with relief organisation SIM in September, and was cleared of the disease later that month.
'We suspect he has an upper respiratory tract infection, with symptoms of cough and conjunctivitis,' the hospital's chair of medicine, Dr Robert Finberg, said in a statement to NBC News.
He said tests are expected back from the federal Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday.

Dr Phil Smith, medical director at the Nebraska Medical Centre where Dr Sacra was treated for Ebola, said three blood tests showed the humanitarian did not have Ebola again.
'Because of his recent battle with the Ebola virus, his immune system is compromised,' Dr Smith said. 'The public shouldn't be concerned that his disease has returned.'
Last month, Dr Sacra was given two transfusions of blood serum from another Ebola survivor, Dr Kent Brantly, in addition to an experimental drug during his treatment.
He was discharged from hospital, virys-free, on September 25.
